About Dr. Melissa Carman:
Dr. Melissa Carman is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) specializing in individual, couples and family therapy. Originally from Ithaca, NY, Melissa has deep roots in Central New York. She earned her B.S. in Human Development from Cornell University (2002), followed by her M.S. in Community Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2004). She earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Syracuse University in 2008, where she specialized in working with emerging adults, identity transitions, and individuals with anxiety disorders. She completed a dual clinical internship at the SU Counseling Center and in private practice at Finger Lakes Psychological Services in Skaneateles, NY.
Upon completion of her doctoral degree, Melissa continued working at the SU Counseling Center as a staff therapist, where she coordinated the family and parent program. She was also an adjunct professor in the SU Counseling Department and taught multiple classes, including master's level research methods and statistics, clinical practicum, and internship.
Melissa opened the doors of Supportive Solutions in January 2011, with a goal of providing counseling services to a broad spectrum of clients in the greater Syracuse community. Her areas of expertise include anxiety and trauma recovery, relationship issues, identity and life transitions, academic stress, and eating disorders. She is welcoming to individuals of all ethnic and religious backgrounds, relationship configurations, and individuals who identify as LGBT, transgender, and gender nonconforming.
While Melissa has always incorporated holistic wellness principles in her own life and in her interventions with clients, she has deepened her passion for mindfulness and yoga interventions. She has attended multiple conferences and workshops on incorporating yoga into mental health clinical practices, and she became a Registered Yoga Teacher through Yoga Alliance in June of 2018. She keeps a regular yoga and meditation practice, and teaches yoga at Breathe in Fayetteville, NY.
Melissa is an interactive, solution-focused therapist who values the connection and depth of the therapeutic relationship. It is her belief that it is through the strength of the therapeutic relationship that clients are able to find strength in vulnerability, heal, and better connect with themselves and others. Her therapeutic approach is to provide support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal life challenges. She integrates complementary methodologies and techniques to offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each client. With compassion and understanding, she works with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.
